To me, the villagers (humanity) were not supposed to avenge for their gods (divinity). if their gods were offended, they should have punished the principal (Mr Obi) for blocking the road.

Should Humanity Avenge Divinity? Discuss Using Chinua Achebe’s Dead Men’s Path and Reuben Onyishi’s Clash of Divinity

The both novels The Clash of Divinity and The Dead Men’s Path captures cultural and religious conflicts where humanity fights for divinity and by so doing makes themselves swords in the hands of divinity for their own destruction, having breached the principles of a superior force.

Should Humanity Avenge Divinity

Should Humanity Avenge Divinity

Conclusively, the importance of a person’s culture is more than just the faith of a single person, it connects a group of people who believe alike and allow them to work together with the same end result. It is important to honour and to remember traditions. In these stories the people fought to uphold the tradition of their village, but the endpoint was destructive. So, let the hawk perch, and let the eagle perch, and if one tells the other not to perch, may his wing break. This was the admonition the Chief Priest gave to Obi the head master in Ndume Central School, and this is because you never know what the hawk might do to the eagle’s nest. Humanity cannot avenge for divinity.

Should Humanity Avenge Divinity (Dead Men's Path)

Should Humanity Avenge Divinity (Dead Men's Path)

Humanity should not avenge divinity. In dead men's path, after the road was blocked by the newly appointed principal who refused to open it even after the warning from the chief priest, and the hard labour of a young woman in the village. The villagers destroyed the school because a diviner said the ancestors were insulted and angry and they had to make heavy sacrifices. To me, the villagers (humanity) were not meant to avenge for their ancestors (divinity). If the ancestors were insulted, they should have revenged for themselves. Besides, the principal was just a man filled with western values.

There is reoccurring motifs of vengeance and inhumanity of the gods to man and of man to man in human existence. The question of human versus human in quest for authority (power) is not isolated even in Christian organization. In Clash of Divinity, this issue is a reoccurring theme and the author uses it judiciously to the development of the plot. This instance is deduced from the text where Rev. Shedrack and Rev. Zeus go for a court trial over an election of who is to be the next General Superintendent (GS) of the church. Humanity may avenge for Divinity if the need arises instead of waiting for a god who is supernatural and whose revenge is not physically and immediately felt. This is because if vengeance is left for Divinity, humanity may have lots of problems because humans knowing full well that any sin committed against humanity will be left for the gods then they will be committing all kinds of atrocity. This is the case of pastor Dinma whose church activities have a clash with that of the ritual activities in the land, knowing full well that during this festival, women are not to come outside. But she complains of ‘…some people being either cold or hot.’ This single act leads the woman to be beaten by the men who avenge for their gods, the reason being that they have seen the nakedness of their gods which is considered a sacrilege.
