Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi" and Aphra Behn's "The Rover" both form part of a wave of dramatic works that graced the English theatre in the era generally considered as the Neoclassical period. This paper seeks to establish a parallel between them whilst attempting to highlight their differences as well. One must note however that they both form part of larger, very distinct subgenres from this period.
Compare and contrast John Webster Duchess ofMalfi” and Alpha Benn “the rover” as Jacoban revenge tragedy and a Restoration comedy.
Psychoanalysis recognizes the mode of being of consciousness where one thing follows another, as the standard mode of being of consciousness. This question of a standard mode of being of consciousness is a range as two or more consciousnesses can perceive the same things slightly differently and may react to them slightly differently too. But outside this range is abnormality, one of which is shifty consciousness where what follows seems not to have any apparent connection with what has gone before or where what is said is unsaid through contradictory actions. Shifty consciousness is recognized to be the state of the consciousness of the speaking voice in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Notes from the Underground. This research work will attempt the explication of this behaviour using the psychoanalytic framework.
